What’s in a name? Stony, Stoney or Ston(e)y? by Blair Mackenzie
From Burleigh Falls, Ontario to Young’s Point, Ontario there stretches a body of water shaped somewhat like a Y on its side. This beautiful body of water, the ‘Jewel of the Kawarthas’, is generally shown on Federal and Provincial maps as ‘Stony Lake’. Locally, however, it is a different matter. The arm extending to the east is known to its residents as Upper Stoney Lake. The central body of water is known to its residents as Stony Lake. The arm stretching to the south is known to its residents as Clear Lake.

Over the years many books have been written about Stony Lake and its environs. In this section I hope to be able to offer to the reader a list of books that show some of the history and personalities of Stony Lake. As I create this list I am not sure how many books there will be so I will start with one and as I get more information I will add it. It would be a bonus if some of the lake people would write a short book report about a book and pass it on to me and I would post it here for others to see.

This beautiful stretch of water, some 20 miles long from Young's Point to the lake's eastern shores encompasses over 1,000 islands and half a dozen 19th century settlements. Native people returned to its healing waters and fragrant pines at least two centuries ago and on-going historic research argues convincingly that Champlain travelled the area lakes, rivers and overland portages in the 1500s. The cottages we see today and the family names that recur generation after generation represent the heritage that so many Stoney Lakers cherish.

The lake, like most lakes in Ontario, were created during and after the last ice age. Various tribes of indians lived in the area and became farmers of the land. In the 16th century Champlain passed through Stony Lake with the couriers de bois on his way back from the west. As time went on, logging became a big industry in the Kawarthas and Stony was used as part of the highway for moving logs down to the sawmills such as at Peterborough. Steel pins with hooks can still be seen anchored in the rock of some of the islands on Stony lake. These hooks were used to tie up the log booms. A system of locks was needed to facilitate the movement of traffic up and down the Kawarthas and in Bobcaygeon in 1833 the first lock was built.. The system was worked on over many years but between 1883 and 1887 locks were built at Burleigh Falls, Lovesick, Buckhorn and Fenelon Falls. The Kawartha Lakes then became navigable from Lakefield to Balsom Lake.
