WHY WERE THE LAKE WEB CAMS SET UP
Initially, the web cams were set up to showcase the beauty of the lake. By showing webcam images on the internet, lake residents and other interested parties were able to see the current lake conditions. The cams were, initially, during the summer but as time went on, some of the cams were operational year round. Viewers could, among other things, watch the ice form in the fall and dissolve in the spring.
A BIT OF HISTORY
The first lake web cam was set up by Peter Jennings in 1997. The communication was via a parallel port and a dial up modem. The camera was located on the Burleigh Channel and uploaded an image every few minutes. Peter approached me about putting the camera on the lake web site. I did that about 1999-2000. The camera was moved to Fairy Lake Island in 2002. Shortly after that the camera was hit by lightning and destroyed. In 2003 a new camera was set up and it was operational every summer until 2012. These images were uploaded via a variety of methods. These included dial up for upload and Bell Satellite for download. In about 2013 DSL (digital subscriber line) (Bell internet over telephone line with speeds about 6-10 mbs) became widely available. In 2013 John’s cam came on line. Shortly after that Paul’s cam came online. There was also a cam at the Burleigh Falls Inn and another one at Eels Creek for a few years. In 2021 the Turtle Cam came on line. Since 2013, the images from the cameras have been available on Peter’s webs site and featured on the Stony Lake web site.
TODAY Today there are 4 cams (during the summer), Lyn’s (formally Paul’s cam), Peter’s, The Turtle cam and John’s cam. During the winter, Lyn's, Peter's and John's cam will be up. (this can be affected by various conditions). There is an archive of all pictures from all cams starting in 2013. In addition to the web cams, Peter’s web cam page also features current weather information as well as water temperature. There are also links to smoke forecast, water level, marine traffic, lightning and leaves. There are historic lake videos and a variety of interesting lake web links. You can find interesting information about things around the lake including a link to the archive.
